Why Are You Carrying a Heavy Load When You Don’t Need to?

As my daughter closed a chapter of her last school day and elementary school in general, she started bringing home her stuff over the last few days.

She emptied some of the stuff from her backpack but decided she didn’t need to fully empty it. She was taking the backpack to school, to add more to it, to then bring it back home.

As I looked at her and her not wanting to empty her backpack fully, I asked her ‘why are you carrying a heavy load when you don’t need to?’

I had to pause and catch myself because I know the Lord could ask me the very same question.

Kaysi, why are you carrying a heavy load when you don’t need to?

Sometimes I do it out of habit.

Sometimes I do it because I forget that Jesus tells me to bring my cares to Him and He will make them light.

He says in  Matthew 11:28-29 “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

The next time I’m carrying around a load unnecessarily, I want to remember this promise. I don’t need to carry this burden alone.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for this reminder that we can empty our backpacks fully and you will be the burden bearer. We don’t need to keep carrying around heavy loads that you’ve told us we can let go of. Help us to rest it all at your feet because you have promised that your burden is light.
