I love how my daughter loves me. There will be times when we are doing our own thing – she may be playing or doing something else, and she will pause and say ‘I love you mom’. I just love it.
One day this week as we were standing in our kitchen, doing whatever it was that we were doing, she says ‘mom, I love you more than anything else’. I smiled. But then she corrected herself. She said, ‘no mom, I love you after God, because if I love you more than God, He’ll be mad’. We then talked about it together. How right and wise she is.
How often do I say I love God more than anything else, but my actions end up showing that I love someone or something more than God. In that way, I’ve made whatever thing an idol in my heart – even unintentionally.
The first 3 commandments that Moses was given had to do with loving God and how we treated Him. Specifically, the first one states: ““You shall have no other gods before me.” Exodus 20:3 NIV
My daughter is learning this very important lesson, I hope I am as well.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for your love and your promises to love us for generations to come when we love and honor you. Help us not to love anything or anyone more than we love you.
