What is Your Legacy?

I’ve often told my mom how proud I am of her. For all that she’s accomplished, yes… But, one of the reasons I tell her this is I recognize that she broke the mold of what was expected of her. While life’s circumstances handed her some situations, she always seemingly chose the hard decision, but the one that would eventually make life easier in the long run.

One of the gifts I see in my mother is her ability to see people. When individuals are in her orbit, she takes time to acknowledge them, to ask their names (and actually remember it too) and then proceeds to make them feel welcomed. I’ve seen her do this time and again.

I recognize that throughout our lives, she has made great and tangible sacrifices, without sacrificing herself or who God has called her to be.

I know this holiday is a hard one for many, for a myriad of reasons. As I take a moment to reflect, I find myself being grateful for my mom, my aunties, my spiritual mom, those who have mothered me in different ways and in different circumstances. I even take a moment to acknowledge and celebrate my friends, whether they are mothers by birth or not – they show up in some amazing ways for others as they pour love and care to those who need it.

And, I can stand on the sidelines and recognize that they too are leaving a legacy for those who they meet.

How would you define what your legacy is?

Dear Heavenly Father, this morning I pause to celebrate all the beautiful women you have blessed us with in our lives. You have seen it fit to allow the gifts that you have given each of us to shine through, so that others may be blessed by them. Thank you for the legacy you are allowing us to leave, with all those we come in contact with.
