Use What You Have

‘Use what you have’… These words have been on my mind for the last few weeks.

I tend to want to solve something by going out and getting the next thing.

Lately, I’ve been feeling like the Lord is calling me to slow down. I really thought I had slowed down significantly over the last few years, but apparently, I’ve not.

A series of recent events have shown me I still have some work to do in the slowing down department.

I started thinking, if I only I had a nice patio and patio set, I could sit in my backyard.

I was quickly reminded that I had a backyard, with chairs, that I’ve hardly used in 7 years.

‘Use what you have’…

So, I started sitting outside for my quiet time instead of my normal spot on the couch. The difference has been huge. I hear and see the shenanigans of the birds. I see the squirrels, and even a bunny as he forages for food.

When my contractor came to look at my roof, I asked about replacing my deck. He quoted me the price and I knew that was not a current year project. He instead suggested I get my current deck power washed and painted.

‘Use what you have’…

His colleague came a few days later to start the process and I’m wondering if this deck has been here all along under the accumulation of dirt. I only saw the version when I moved in and assumed it was an old deck that would one day be replaced.

‘Use what you have’…

As he started power washing, my mouth dropped wide open as I saw the before and after boards.

My once old looking deck is now a beautiful wooden deck, waiting for a new coat of paint.

‘Use what you have’…

Friends, what do you have in your life that God is telling you to look again? That thing that you have taken for granted simply because it’s there, not truly seeing the beauty that exists?

‘Use what you have’…

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you that I don’t need to replace this to enjoy it. Thank you for the reminder that there is beauty all around, I simply need to look for it. Thank you for the reminder to slow down and truly listen to you.
