Tunnels

Today, I took my daughter into the city. It’s not her first trip in, but she’s always so excited when she gets a chance to ride either the Long Island Rail Road or the subway or any combination.  She gets excited about traveling – actually, she loves traveling anywhere.

For some reason, today we made a big deal about going through the tunnel, and as we were still outside – she commented that it was a long tunnel. I told her that we hadn’t started the tunnel yet, but when we did, she would know as it would be long and dark, but when the tunnel was over, we would be at our destination.  Again, she was super excited. After being in the tunnel for a few moments, she observed something so profound that we as adults sometimes miss – there were lights there.  As we were speeding through, I am so accustomed to holding my head down reading or doing something else, I usually miss it.

When we are going through the tunnels of life, there is light there. We are just usually so busy focused on the fact that we are going through the long stretch of darkness, that we miss that there is light lighting our way.  And how amazing that when it is all over, that we usually get to our destinations safely?

Today, I don’t know what tunnel you are facing, but stop and observe the hand of God in your tunnel, and you will see little bursts of light, and that He is working.

Lord, we thank you that even in the midst of our tunnels that you are there.  Help us to hold fast to your promises that even when we “pass through the waters.. and through the rivers” that they will not overwhelm us, but we need to hold on to your promises.
