Remember Your Priorities

As I woke up early to write today’s blog, I got distracted with other things. As I tried to refocus my mind on what needed to be done, I smiled at the topic I had written down a few days ago ‘Remember Your Priorities’ and all of a sudden, it was serving as another good reminder.

A few days ago as my daughter came and snuggled with me during my quiet time, I had started journaling but was a far way from being done. I got a notification that I was excited about, and told her. The window for us to act on something had just opened, and we could take care of it.

I told her I hadn’t finished journaling, but now that the window was opened, I was going to my office to take care of it. She casually said ‘remember your priorities’…  so, because I wasn’t sure which direction she’d go in, I asked ‘what is my priority?’

She said ‘it’s journaling right now’.

I was both proud and humbled.

She gave me a kiss and went off to do her own thing while I continued in my quiet and finished journaling, choosing to remember what my priority was for that moment.

The irony is, when I did try to do the thing I was initially distracted by, I wasn’t able to. But instead of trying multiple times as is my nature, I saw what the message was and determined to wait. Because I had spent a few more minutes in peace, I approached it with a different perspective.

Sometimes it takes a child to remind us what’s important and what’s not. May we always be reminded to ‘remember our priorities’.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for these simple, yet poignant lessons. Help us that when we have a task in front of us, not to be distracted by the seemingly important, especially when it takes time from you.
