Did you know that it is ok to ask God questions?
One of the most beautiful things I have discovered as I’ve continued my faith journey is that God welcomes my questions. He is even patient with me when I ask the same question over and over because I genuinely don’t understand a situation or I am asking Him for guidance. I truly believe He loves when I come to Him in humble submission and ask ‘God, what are you doing here?’
My human mind cannot fathom the way how our awesome God works. There are things that I see that makes no sense to me, and I say: ‘God, I don’t understand’; ‘I don’t understand why this loved one had to die’; ‘I don’t understand why you are putting me through this situation’; ‘how long Lord?’…
Imagine if you were in a relationship with someone and you could not ask them questions, how would that make you feel? Would that endear you to the person or make you want to stay away? God wants us to come to Him with our concerns, no matter how big or small you may think they are.
Before you think I’m making this up, let me share some evidence:
Jeremiah 33:3 ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know’
Jeremiah 29:12-13 ‘Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. ‘
Isaiah 6:11 ‘Then I said, “For how long, Lord?” And he answered: “Until the cities lie ruined and without inhabitant, until the houses are left deserted and the fields ruined and ravaged,’
Habakkuk 1:2 ‘How long, LORD, must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, “Violence!” but you do not save?’
These are only 4 examples. The first two are a direct promise of what will happen when we call upon/ask God questions. The other two are instances where God’s people asked questions, and God answered.
I honestly believe that God delights in answering our questions. But the one thing I’ve learned, if you ask God questions, He may not answer the way you expect.
I love the book of Job. Job asked God many questions. But when God did answer, I don’t believe Job was prepared for any of His responses, and there are chapters and chapters of God’s responses. You know what Job’s humble response was after?
It’s recorded in Job 42:1-6, but I’ll highlight verse 5: “My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you.”
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you that you have given us the ok to come seeking you and to be able to ask our questions of you. Isaiah tells us that your thoughts and ways are higher than our thoughts and ways. Father, there are times we just do not understand how it all fits together. Help us to come to you with our questions, but also help us to understand that you are working things out in ways that we may never understand this side of heaven.
