I love Fridays!
It’s typically the day I get to pick up my daughter and have no plans – so we get more one on one time.
This particular Friday, we had pre-discussed getting McDonald’s as her treat for dinner. As I was already close to the restaurant, I stopped in and picked up what I knew she would want. I even placed it in her car seat so that it would be the first thing she saw when she got in the car.
When I picked her up, she reminded me of my promise to get her McDonald’s. I told her ‘we’ll see’. She started whining and crying and reminding me that I had promised. I still told her ‘we’ll see’. She knows I keep my promises to her, but in her moment of wanting what she wanted, she must have doubted my ability to keep such a simple promise.
When we went outside a few minutes later, her McDonald’s happy meal was right where I had left it. I saw her face light up as she expressed her surprise at me remembering and getting it for her.
Isn’t this how we are with God too?
We ask Him for something and because He doesn’t present our answers right away, we start doubting that He remembers or that He will keep His promises. I’m trying to whine and complain a little less as I wait for His promises to come to pass.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the examples that you are giving us. Thank you that you are not like man and that you will not lie or go back on your word, but you keep your promises. Thank you that you are still a good father, whether your answer is, ‘no. Not yet. Or yes’ – your answer does not change the fact that you are a good God and father.
