As I prayed and contemplated what to share, the devotion ‘The Power of Words’ had a marker. I kept looking past this place because it did not seem to grab my attention.
After some time, I landed right back to this devotion and the verse associated with it is Matthew 12:34b, which states ‘Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks’.
This is a sobering verse for me as you may know that my first love language is ‘words of Affirmation’. I love to be affirmed and I love to affirm others. I try to share the beauty of what I see in others.
But what happens on the other occasions when my heart may be filled with anger and frustration?
Do you realize that when we have buried these emotions in our hearts, that they will come out in conversation too?
If we are in the midst of a heated or even a conversation where we might not agree on something, sometimes the thoughts we have been harboring in our hearts will pop right out of our mouths before we know exactly where they came from.
The next time I’m in a conversation, may I be mindful of what’s in my heart, so that it may positively flow out of my heart and not cause more harm.
There is a saying ‘sticks and stones may break our bones but words don’t hurt me’. I think we’ve all discovered that’s a lie. Many of us still carry emotional scars from something said to us many years prior.
So, let us endeavor to mind what is in our hearts before the words come out of our mouths.
Dear Heavenly Father, I’m always so grateful that you are an on time God. No matter what the situation looks like, that you always answer when we call. Continue to be with us, continue to help us to be mindful of the way we speak and the words we speak to others.
