Yesterday, I heard of the tragic and sudden passing of my church’s conference former president.
I did not know him well, but somehow throughout the years, we had become Facebook friends. As I read through many of the beautiful tributes, this was a man who was deeply respected.
I think of one of the few in person interactions I had with him. It was at a conference wide workshop for clerks, treasurers and stewardship leaders. As I stood on line, waiting to be served lunch, there was the conference president (at the time), sleeves rolled up and serving with a smile.
That interaction left a lasting impression.
I would see his Facebook posts, where he took time to comment on social justice posts, even when they were tension filled. I saw as he took vacations and traveled the world. As many of you know, something I enjoy doing as well.
He passed away suddenly on Friday.
So, what’s the lesson here?
I’ve thought about how fragile life can be.
Live life like it’s golden.
Love others well.
Serve others well.
Do the things that light you up.
Remember that ‘YOLO’.. You only live once.
Please note this is not permission to live a reckless and selfish life as the ‘YOLO’ phrase sometimes imply.
It is guidance to live a life that honors you and those around you. To do the things you are called to do with love, wisdom, grace and kindness.
Dear Heavenly Father, life is seemingly so short and so many things can happen at any given time. Help us to live a life that honors you. To do the things that you have called us to do, and to proceed in wisdom and love.
