Have you ever had that sense that you should or shouldn’t do something?
As I was having lunch in my office, I finished eating and decided for ease, to put the plate on the ground next to me. The contents held the green grease of the vegetables I had been eating. I instantly saw in my mind’s eye me stepping in it. I disregarded it because I thought no way would I step into it. I’m way more careful than that. And I was busy anyway – I’ll put it away soon.
A while later, I got a phone call and needed to get up. Without even a moment to think, I spun around, and stepped right into (you guessed it) – the green grease splattered in my large patches of almost white carpet. I was annoyed at myself but didn’t have time to survey the damage, as I needed to tend to something right then. Later when I went back to clean it with a Clorox wipe, I thought of the irony. How much time would I have saved had I just put the plate away when the thought initially occurred to do it.
Conversely, I ran into my friend later that day. Our kids had had a play date the day before and while they were playing, we were having a moment to sit and talk. They were preparing for their upcoming trip a few days later.
She explained that after I left she continued her packing. She got a sense that something wasn’t right. She didn’t know what it was, but she knew that something was wrong. She said upon checking the passports for her kids, they were both expired. She had 4 days left, of which only 2 were business days. After her research all night, she was able to get the process started right away, and will have their passports in hand prior to their long awaited vacation.
Imagine if she had been like me and not listened?
I pray the next time you get a sense that you should or shouldn’t do something, that you react accordingly.
Dear Heavenly Father, sometimes we do or don’t do things that we are moved to because we believe they are small and inconsequential. Help us to realize that even the little things can lead to bigger things. Prick our hearts when we are or are not doing things that we ought to be doing.
