I Lack Nothing

As I contemplated this week’s topic and opened my Bible for a clue, I stumbled on Psalm 23.  I was instantly reminded of a phrase that has been on my heart for a while: ‘I lack nothing’.

I know there is another version, also in Psalms, so I flipped until I found it.  Psalm 34:8-10 states: Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him. Fear the Lord, you his saints, for those who fear him lack nothing: the lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

These words are underlined and circled in my Bible.

This usually means that at some point, they seemingly jumped off the page at me.

As I contemplate this phrase and share it with you, please know I don’t have everything I desire. And yet, there is a contentment within me that nothing is lacking in this season.

It’s hard to describe.

It also brings to mind another verse that I’ve held on to. Psalm 84:11 For the Lord is a sun (provider) and shield (protector); the Lord bestows favor and honor: no good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless.

*Parentheses are my additions of the insight I had as I meditated on this verse for the 100th time.

The Lord is a provider and a protector. He knows exactly what we need and provides it at just the right time – and this, is why I can say ‘I lack nothing’.

Heavenly Father, I continue to be in awe of your love and care. Thank you for the ways you provide and protect. Both in the grand gestures and the seemingly unnoticeable things, and yet we know, they are your good and perfect gifts. Help us to seek you for all we need.
