I call you Friend

‘When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock, lead me to the rock, that is higher than I.’ So many songs that we hear and sing that we do not know the context. I woke up yesterday morning with that song in my head. I don’t think my heart is overwhelmed, but it’s been on my mind. As usual, when I got to the office and searched for the lyrics, it turned out that it’s found in Psalms. Likewise, a song that I was reminded of recently, ‘Who am I that you are mindful of me? Thinking of me, when I call?’ And the chorus says ‘I am a friend of God.’ Turns out that both Moses and Abraham were considered friends of God. This was yet another blatant biblical reference in song that I didn’t know.
I’ve been reading a book called ‘Dare to ask for more’, and I’m in the early chapters, but the context of Abraham and Moses being friends of God really opened my eyes. What is your relationship like with your best friend? Do you call/text them and tell them many details of your life that no one else knows? So should our relationship be with God. We should be yearning to call Him friend, just as He calls us friend. We should be excited to share with Him about our day, about our trials and our victories. But you say, wait, He’s God, He doesn’t need us to tell Him anything, doesn’t He know everything? Yes, of course He knows everything, but how would your friend feel if the only time you approached was when you wanted or needed something? Is that a true friendship? We are told multiple times in the bible to ask and it shall be received, if it’s God’s will. How do we know what is God’s will? It comes with relationship. In the same way you learn about your best friends likes and dislikes, so too you learn about God’s likes and dislikes when you get to know Him personally and build your relationship.
Lord, help me to learn your word so well, that the songs I hear are not a surprise that they are biblical words/verses, and allow me to hide them in my heart so that I may not sin against you. Lord, help me to become best friends with you and to grow in your love so that we share easily in each of our lives. I long for a relationship where we can have dialogue where I can come to you and I know without a doubt that you have answered, because I know your voice. Thank you for all you do.
