I’m rarely away from my daughter and need to call her. As a part of my morning time away on vacation, I left her with my mom in the room. Typically, our other friends call the room to make arrangements for our meeting times. Instead, it was me who called because they took longer than I expected. My daughter answered the phone. She recognized my voice right away. I gave her instructions to tell my mom to meet me by the elevators. I forgot to mention which set of elevators. We could either have met on our floor or up for breakfast.
Before when my mom asked who had called, my daughter told her with certainty that it was me and not our friends. When my mother came out and didn’t see me by the elevators, she once again asked her if she was sure and went as far as asking her who she would believe. My daughter, once again, with certainty, told her that it had been me. When they came upstairs, I was standing by the elevators, right where I said I would be.
When my mom shared the story, I instantly thought of what God tells us. He promised that we will be able to recognize His voice, just as my daughter did. But I’m sure that didn’t happen right away. It came from hearing my voice often and listening to me. That’s the same relationship God wants us to have. He wants a relationship with us, so that we will easily be assured of who’s voice we are hearing when He speaks. He also wants us to be assured of the directions we are receiving. Sometimes we may not be sure of our directives, but if we know His voice and our will is aligned with His will, we will know His voice when we hear it and be assured of the next steps we are to take.
Dear Heavenly Father, please teach us how to hear you. Help us in our relationship that we can trust what you say, even when we don’t understand what you are telling us to do, because we know your voice so well.
