False sense of security

I have two smoke alarms, so I’d like to think I’m pretty covered. I try to make sure that I change the batteries – but not always remembering to do it when the clock changes, which is around every 6 months. Do I really need to do it that often anyway?
I was cooking recently and something boiled over into the stove – which caused a lot of smoke. My daughter who was in the living room, heard the slight chirping sound, but not much more that than.
When I went to figure out why my smoke detector wasn’t going off – I then also heard the very slight chirping sound – not enough that it would alert me to an emergency. I quickly knew that I needed to change the battery. I changed it and it made a little more noise, but again, not enough to alert me in a true emergency. I knew it was time for a new one.
I would have liked to think my smoke detector would notify me if there was smoke or a fire in my home. I had a false sense of security.
Is there something that you are holding on to, thinking that it is providing you with security – when it’s really providing no protection at all?
Dear Heavenly Father, please help us to realize that our only security is in you. Help us to let go of the things that we have falsely held on to, thinking that we are safe because we have held on to them.
