As I sat in church and listened to the message, a thought came up mind: ‘Do you know Him?’
I made a note and kept on listening.
As I sat with friends later in the afternoon, there seemed to be a recurring theme. We had attended different churches and then had congregated to celebrate our friend’s birthday.
One friend posed a question that had come up in a previous discussion with another of her friends: if God already knows everything, why do we need to pray?
That’s a very interesting question.
I woke up thinking of a song ‘He knows my name’ by Tasha Cobbs. I thought of some of the scripture that tells us that even before we were born, He knows us. Another one comes to mind, the very hair on our heads are numbered.
He knows us.
But, that doesn’t answer the question of why do we pray if He already knows everything.
You see, I believe when we are in a relationship, it’s not enough for one person to know the other. A relationship is something that happens both ways. He knows us. We, get to know Him.
I believe that happens by intentionally taking time to stop and listen. To slow down to hear what He has to say to us. To read His word and allow Him to highlight instructions for us. Some of that happens by praying: us speaking, but intentionally making room in the prayer conversation to listen.
So, I am confident that He knows us. But my question to you and me is:
Do you know Him?
Dear Heavenly Father, your love and care still amazes me. Thank you for coming close and giving instructions to us. Thank you for choosing us. Teach us how to grow more in our knowledge of you and to see your love for us.
