Directions

I work in one of the busiest cities in the world. On my way to work the other day, as I was walking on the sidewalk, I gazed up to one of the tallest buildings. I’m a true to the core New Yorker – there is no stopping to gaze upon anything, only continued movement while gazing.

As I glanced up and kept walking, I started veering to the right. I quickly adjusted my vision to directly in front of me. But because I wanted to confirm what I suspected just happened to me, I looked up again. This time I started veering to the left. Again, I had to refocus to where I was going.
In that moment, I remembered my driving instructor telling me years ago that as I was driving, I needed to look at where I wanted to go. Wherever I focused my attention, that would likely be where my car would go.
I think it’s the same in our Christian walk. We need to keep our eyes on where we want to go. If we get distracted and start looking at the things around us, we will lose focus on what our main goal is and should be. A thought comes to mind ‘this is the way you should go – neither veer to the left nor to the right’. The only way we will do this is by keeping our attention completely focused on where we are going.
Proverbs 3:5-6 states,  ‘Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. [6] In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.’ I pray that you will join me in asking for constant direction so that we will know when we are veering to the right or to the left.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for guiding us. Please show us the way we should go. Help us to keep our focus on you so that we won’t get distracted and bogged down by the cares of this world but that we will completely rely on you to get us to our destinations safely.
