When I was a little girl and started visiting my father in the US, he’d pick me up at JFK airport in New York, and it was such a daunting airport because of its size. As we would drive out to exit I’d ask him the same question: ‘Dad, how did you know how to get out and not get lost?’ His response was always the same: ‘It’s easy, all you have to do is read the signs and follow the directions’.
I recently had to go to the airport, and my conversation from when I was a little girl came back to mind. I did well. I read the signs and followed the directions. I knew I had to go to domestic Delta arrival, which meant a pickup at Terminal 2, except when I got there, my girlfriend was no where in sight and there were only a few people standing and waiting. You see, I was so sure of the domestic terminal arrival, that I never bothered to check with her which terminal she had landed. After I consulted with her, turns out she was at terminal 4. I almost started to panic thinking I was going to have to completely exit the airport, but I decided to go back to my father’s earlier instructions of reading and following the signs. It turns out it was one easy turn away.
God’s words give us directions of how to go, but we have to read and follow them to get to our destination. Have you ever been so sure of your final destination that you didn’t even feel the need to consult God? And only after you made a mess of things that you thought it was time to reach out to him? God wants you to consult Him before any decision is made, no matter how big or small.
Proverbs 1:8 states, ‘listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.’ This applies to daughters of the King as well.
Dear Heavenly Father, help us to consult with you on all our decisions, no matter what the size is. Help us to read your words, digest them and ask you for guidance on how to apply them to our daily living so that we can use them as directions for our lives.
