One morning as I was walking out of my office building with a set of double doors, I saw this lady struggling to keep one door open with her body while trying to maneuver the hand cart that was almost as big as she was. I asked if she needed help. She smiled and said ‘no thank you. I’m ok’… she clearly was not.
She was having a hard time with the door, her pocket book and the huge handcart. I decided to hold the other door open for her, which she walked through much more easily. I smiled at her and said ‘sometimes it’s ok to ask for help, especially when it’s being offered’.
She smiled back and admitted she didn’t like asking for help. I smiled, and responded ‘I can be like that too’. Then we both ended up going in our opposite directions.
However, the interaction did not leave me.
Around the same time, I was having a conversation with a friend. He’d already offered to help in any way I needed. As he was sharing something with me, I wanted a visual – but I was too nervous to ask. The next morning I woke up to the text in Matthew 7:7 which states, ‘Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you’
1 John 5:14 ‘This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, He hears us’
Later that morning, I decided to brave it and ask – and true to his word, he was more than willing to help.
Is there something in your life that you desire, but you are too afraid to ask? Remember today’s promise: ask and it shall be given. If you don’t ask, your answer will almost always be a ‘no’.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the reminder that all we have to do is ask according to your will. Help us to be aligned with you, so that we may know your will for our lives.
