‘And There Was a Sign’

A few years ago, I had a very important decision to make. I had started to feel like the Lord was calling me in a different direction,  but it didn’t make much sense to me at the time.

I had recently read Mark Batterson’s book ‘Draw the Circle’ where he shared about praying around places that he needed to make decisions on, and so I had started the same. I slightly changed my walking path, so that I could pray around what would be an important building.

That particular morning as I was talking to God in my heart, a couple things happened. My girlfriend sent me a text to tell me to do what God had laid on my heart. While she and I had been talking a little bit – I don’t think I had fully disclosed everything  (I’m very private and don’t usually share things until they are over). I was blown away and we were texting and as I was walking, thanking her for confirming some things. She said she had been praying and I crossed her mind and she sent the text.

A few minutes later, as I continued walking, I asked the Lord for a sign. I’m very much like Gideon in the Bible, wanting a sign that this thing was really as He said. Within a few moments, as I was passing in front of this very important building, stood a homeless man, with his Bible, and the only words I heard him say were ‘and there was a sign’.

Remember, just a few blocks, and few minutes prior, I had asked God for a sign. Here was this man, with his Bible opened talking about ‘a sign’.

My legs were jello as I could not believe what had just happened.

I continued drawing circles around that area until I was 100% sure that it was God’s new direction that I was being called to.

Today, I can confidently look back and say He can use anyone, no matter what others think it should look like.

And, I have to say this: that was just the start of the new direction that I had to follow. God has since completely blown my mind and exceeded expectations of anything I could have imagined.

I pray you seek direction, ask for clarification if you need to, but that you ultimately take the steps that God is calling you to.

Dear Heavenly Father, so many years later and I am still humbled at how you can speak through so clearly through anyone. Thank you for answering my doubts and reconfirming each time I asked and presented a new test. Thank you for not leaving us alone to figure out life by ourselves, but you are in the midst of everything with us.
