A Gentle Whisper

As I jokingly wondered if today would be the day that I would send out a blog that says ‘I’m too tired to think of anything. I’ll see you next week.’ I chuckled to myself: will today be the day that the Lord does not provide a blog post?

I don’t think it happens very often but every now and then I wonder, as I am needing to write something, ‘will today be that day?’

I’ve had a very full week, which included flying cross country with a different time zone (which I’m completely amazed by and trying to understand how a three hour time difference can produce such a different reaction in my body). Lots of activities related to my child and still running my financial planning business. Needless to say I’m exhausted.

As I flipped through my Bible, wondering if I would have a message, a familiar passage of scripture jumped out at me.

Found in first Kings 19:12-13 ‘After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “what are you doing here, Elijah?“

How often do we find ourselves exhausted from doing the things that we feel we’ve been called to do, we’re looking for God to show up and it seems He does not. I use the word ‘seems’ because that’s what it is. It seems He does not show up or maybe it’s not on the timeline that we have created for ourselves.

In the story, Elijah had done all the things, and yet he found himself exhausted and running for his life and waiting to hear from God, who does not show up in the grand gestures of the powerful wind tearing apart the mountains, or the earthquake or even a fire. Instead, He shows up as a gentle whisper.

How often do we miss this presence because we’re looking for a much more grand outcome, instead of being still, and experiencing the gentle whisper?

So, today is not the day that I will send out that I have nothing to share. It would be yet another reminder that I simply have to sit still and wait for God to show up and tell me. That has been one of the best outcomes over the last 10+ years of writing, waiting for God to show up and to whisper, just for today what the words would be. I’m grateful I have the opportunity to sit in His presence.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for your love and that you keep showing up. I know it’s nothing that I have done to deserve it, but you still see fit to love me and to show others your love through these simple words. Father, I ask that you continue to be with all of us, whispering gentle words, and allowing us to sit still long enough to hear them.
